Day 1 Quito — Yacuma Lodge
From Quito, early in the morning, you would travel at your own expenses to the city of Tena, the capital of the Napo Province. You can use public transportation, private vehicle (4 hours) or you can fly by plane on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The land journey starts from Quito and crosses the Andes where, if you are lucky, the beautiful Antisana Volcano can be seen. Further on, you will pass by the town of Baeza, from where you will descend towards the stunning jungle of the Alto Amazonas. Upon arrival to Tena, our guide will be waiting for you and in about 1h50 he will drive you to the community of San Pedro de Sumino located along the shores of Napo River. From San Pedro, we will board a canoe and in 30 minutes of a pleasant ride we will arrive to our Ecolodge. It is located on the banks of the river Chontayacu — our rainforest reserve of 300 hectares. In the lodge you will be greeted with the typical local drink known as “guayusa” and then you can make yourself comfortable in our traditional Amazon-style bungalows accommodation. After a short rest, we will have the possibility to practice the use of a blowgun and we will have an interesting explanation how to use the “curare”, natural poison that was used by the Kichwa Community for hunting. Next in the program, the native guide will show you our little representation of Kichwa culture – a model house, which has elements showcasing their culture. Dinner will be at 19h00 and if passengers wish, they could take a night walk to observe insects and enjoy the sounds of the jungle. Dinner.
Day 2 Yacuma Rainforest Reserve
After breakfast in the lodge, we will begin a walk in the primary rainforest of our Yacuma reserve. For this activity, we have various alternatives. A short two hours walk where the native guide will show you many species of plants and describe their medicinal purposes. The second will take around four hours crossing small streams and different kinds of terrains with several species of trees and plants. The second one will aim for the visit of the main attraction of the day — the “Tutapishku Cave” (bats cave) in combination with the explanation of medicinal plants.
In the cave which has not been fully explored yet, you can watch an interesting and exciting show of one of the species of the Amazon bats (Saccopteryx bilineata). This cave is considered by the locals as a sacred place, where “The Shamans” (medicine man) come to renew their energy and then they make sacred rituals. With a little luck we will see monkeys, birds like “orioles”, parrots, and other animals. This walk is quite exciting and requires more effort, but at the same time it is rewarding for the experience of being in touch with the true primary rainforest. We will return to the lodge to have a delicious lunch and a short rest. Then we will visit the members of the Chontayacu Kichwa Family, to appreciate their simple but quiet way of life. On the way the passengers can observe, interact and learn with their native guide about local crops such as coffee, bananas, cacao, cassava, papaya, pineapple, orange trees, sugar cane, among others. Also, we can observe (and buy) the pottery, necklaces and other beautiful crafts made by the Kichwa people. You will have the opportunity to taste the ancestral Kichwa drink “chicha”. The program continues with the activities like tubing and kayaking* or you can simply enjoy a refreshing dip in the Chontayacu or Napo river. Return to the lodge for a special dinner and finally we will have a farewell bonfire. Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.
*The lodge has 4 Kayaks, each one for 2 people.
For those interested in bird watching we will make an early start at 5:30 am, in order to enjoy the view of different bird species existing in the vicinity of Yacuma Lodge. For this, we will climb to the look out, where we will enjoy the beautiful view of the Amazon Jungle. After breakfast we say goodbye to our indigenous friends and we will begin our canoe ride along the Napo River back to Santa Pedro de Sumino where our guide will help you take the public bus to the city of Tena. Breakfast.
If you decide to make this amazing trip in private transportation, on your way back we recommend you to visit the small town of Misahaullí known for its monkey population and then you could enter the caves of Jumandy or you may continue until the Papallacta hot springs water.
