The climate in the Amazon rainforest
The first thing you should consider when planning a trip to the rainforest is the climate. Although the Amazon enjoys a warm and humid environment, there is a division in the seasons; and the best one depends on what you want to experience. Especially in Ecuador, the dry season is from June to September; while the rainy season is from October to May.
Let's talk about the Dry season (June to September)
This is the most popular season for tourists, as there is less rain and excursions are a little easier; you will have beautiful sunsets to enjoy while canoeing or tubing down the river; and generally the clear sky will be your companion on your adventures.
Advantages of the dry season in the Ecuadorian Amazon
Less rain: The excursions are easier because the terrain is not too muddy or slippery, meaning that the trails are more passable.
Species sighting: During the dry season, jungle animals often come to the banks of the Napo and Chontayacu rivers to quench their thirst.
Less insects: During these months there will also be fewer mosquitoes; however, never forget to pack your repellent.
Disadvantages of the dry season in the Ecuadorian Amazon
You are likely to find more tourists because of the favorable conditions for exploring the surrounding forest.
Let's talk about the rainy season (October to May)
During this season, the Amazon rainforest in Ecuador usually blooms, and the landscapes shine with the reflection of the sun in the raindrops; the flowers are more radiant and the rivers flow more intensely, irrigating the entire field with vital liquid.
Advantages of the Rainy Season in the Ecuadorian Amazon
Green landscapes: Our private reserve is perfect for nature and photography lovers; during the rainy season the colors stand out and the jungle remains in its greenest state; during this season you will have the opportunity to capture images of the lush, flowering tropical forest.
Fewer tourists: Another great advantage is that the influx of tourists decreases and those who arrive during this time live a quieter and more exclusive Amazonian experience.
Disadvantages of the Rainy Season in the Ecuadorian Amazon
Heavy rains: The rains are much longer and can even extend for several days, and this can cause changes in the itineraries, but don’t worry, because we will always make sure that you live a complete adventure.
Greater presence of insects: The high humidity in tropical climates causes groups of mosquitoes to grow; therefore it is always necessary to use repellent and appropriate clothing, which covers the parts of the body that are usually the most affected, such as the ankles and forearms.
What to bring on my trip to the Ecuadorian Amazon according to the climate
To make the most of your stay in the Amazon rainforest, you must take into account certain essential elements; and although there is a noticeable change in temperature between the rainy and dry seasons, the truth is that the elements we leave you are quite welcome at any time of the year.
It is always a good idea to bring light clothing, long-sleeved shirts and loose, long trekking pants to protect yourself from the sun and mosquito bites. It is also important that they are light and soft colors, as dark colors tend to absorb more sunlight.
A hat, sunglasses with UV protection and sunscreen are also essential items for exploring the Amazon rainforest.
Even if you are traveling in the dry season, a good raincoat will be a great help if sporadic rain falls while you are on a hike around the reserve.
Rubber boots. You don’t have to worry about these shoes, as at Yacuma Ecolodge we have enough pairs for you and your travel companions.
In conclusion, any season in the Ecuadorian Amazon offers an unforgettable experience; both the dry and rainy seasons have a variety of charms and challenges, however, it is definitely worth exploring one of the most diverse ecosystems on the planet. If you prefer clear skies and fewer mosquito bites, the dry season will be the ideal option; although if the rain does not bother you and you want to explore the Ecuadorian Amazon rainforest at its most exuberant, then the rainy season awaits you. Whatever your decision, at Yacuma Ecolodge we will be happy to guide you through our home to make this trip one of the best of your life.
