If there is one thing that all Ecuadorians are proud of, it is the enormous diversity that this small territory has. In each region you will find natural environments, lake areas and riverbanks where fantastic animal species live. We are located in the Ecuadorian Amazon, specifically in the Chontayacu community of Tena and although we love all the species that share our home, we have a special affection for birds.

2. When to visit the Ecuadorian Amazon? The best time for bird watching.
Bird watching is an activity that can be done all year round. The Amazon, despite having two seasons, dry and rainy, does not present a drastic change in climate. Even so, there are optimal seasons for certain activities and, above all, for maximizing the chances of sighting species.
September to November: The dry season usually makes it easier to access trails, so walks in the middle of the forest will not tire you out as much and will be much more stable. This season is ideal for birdwatching in open areas such as river beaches and around open lagoons and swamps.
December to March: These months are the rainy season and usually bring greater activity in the canopy, which is the layer of branches and leaves that forms in forests by the tops of a group of trees and usually covers large areas of land. This season is ideal for observing migratory species.
3. Essential equipment for birdwatching
To ensure a good birdwatching experience, it is advisable to have some resources:
Binoculars: It is best if they have a range of 8×42 or 10×50, which are ideal for the jungle.
Bird guide: This is ideal for knowing what type of birds you will find in the area.
A lens with good zoom: This will allow you to capture detailed images of the birds you see.
Light clothing: Nothing black, use neutral colors that blend in with the environment.
Hiking boots: Try to get waterproof ones or wear rubber boots.
The essentials: Insect repellent and sunscreen.
4. Where to go bird watching at Yacuma Ecolodge?
At Yacuma Ecolodge we offer several strategic points for bird watching, however the entire area is good for sitting down for a second and counting how many birds cross the sky.
Forest trails: For excursions in the area, it is necessary to attend with our local guide, he will show you each place and lead you to the areas of your interest; in this way you will travel through different biomes, from humid areas such as our hoatzin lagoon, to areas more covered by walking palms and giant ceibos.
Observation area: From a small elevation you have a panoramic view of the Yacuma Ecolodge Reserve. From here very early in the morning you will see birds of prey, parrots and toucans.
River banks: At dawn or as night approaches, this area becomes very active, as aquatic birds often frequent the riverbank to feed. Herons and kingfishers often come to the Chontayacu River.
5. Featured birds you might encounter
At the Yacuma Ecolodge Private Reserve you will find a wide variety of exotic and colorful birds. Some of the most emblematic ones are:
Amazon Kingfisher (Chloroceryle amazona): The kingfisher is a large, dark green bird with an uneven crest.
Pará Cacique (Psarocolius bifasciatus): The Amazonian oriole has a reddish wattled cheek and a black beak with an orange tip.
Blue-gray Tanager (Thraupis episcopus): A bird with bright blue wings and tail, dark eyes, and dark gray legs.
Chestnut Arasar (Pteroglossus castanotis): It has a blue patch of bare skin around the pale eye and a red band on its yellow belly.
Carza Mora (Ardea cocoi): A large, slender bird with a blue-gray back, white neck, and a white cap. Black-bellied Hoatzin (Opisthocomus hoazin): This is a herbivorous, large peacock found around slow-moving lakes and streams. It is one of our symbols and we have a pond full of them.
6. Tips for Birdwatching in the Ecuadorian Amazon Rainforest.

Getting up early is key. The first hours of the day are when birds are most active, so plan your departure time and get out before the sun sets over the Amazon forest.
Stay quiet. Avoid making loud noises and move slowly, so you don’t scare the birds or any other animals in the area.
Look for shade. Find an enclosed area where you can stand and wait to minimize your presence and make observation easier.
Be patient. Some species often take a while to appear, so don’t despair, as the rewards in your photographs will be great.
