15/07/2023Meet the true owners of the Amazon forest
There is something deeply exciting about discovering the beauty of the world’s natural ecosystems. Knowing and seeing the life of these ecosystems will only increase your desire to protect them.
In the private reserve of Yacuma EcoLodge we have a great variety of flora and fauna of the Ecuadorian Amazon. We have already introduced you to our little friend Kuma, the enigmatic hoatzin that hangs from the branches to reach the tops of the gigantic trees; but we have a few more friends who brighten the days of the lodge with their singing and his presence.
Some of the most notable birds found in the Ecuadorian Amazon and if you are lucky you will be able to see them at Yacuma EcoLodge:
Purple Hen:
The purple hen has quite striking plumage, its body is dark blue and light blue on the chest; It also has long limbs to function in aquatic environments.
This is important because the purple chicken lives in aquatic areas of the Amazon forest and feeds on insects and seeds found in the water.
Toucans:
We have several species of toucans at Yacuma EcoLodge. These large birds with striking and colorful beaks. Like the canoe-billed toucan, which is one of the most seen in the rainforest, it has shiny black plumage accompanied by a yellow throat and a strong warm-colored beak.
You can also see Toco Toucans, one of the largest of this species in the world, recognizable by its black and white plumage; and finally the iris-billed toucan that visitors usually identify by its yellow chest.
Tangaras:
Tanagers are small and quite active birds that usually have colorful and contrasting feathers. In the private reserve where Yacuma EcoLodge is located, several species of tanagers can be observed, such as the blue tanager, named for the notable blue color of its feathers that are contrasted with yellow parts on the underside; The hooded tanager also has shades of vibrant blue, but in its case its plumage is contrasted with a shiny black on its head and throat. Finally we have the Rufous-crowned Tanager, which appears with green plumage accompanied by intense red tones on its head.
Bull-blooded tanager:
This vibrant and eye-catching bird we found at Yacuma EcoLodge is also found in the tropical regions of Central and South America. Visitors can see its bright, deep red plumage on its body while exploring the nature reserve.
The Bullblood Tanager is quite social and has a distinctive song, filling the forests with its melodic calls.
Colaptes punctigula:
The Spot-bellied Woodpecker is quite striking in the forest due to the patterns of its spotted plumage and the red and white stripes on its head; It also has a strong beak that it uses to peck the bark of trees in search of food.
Although the spotted-bellied woodpecker is considered a species of least concern in terms of extinction, extractive activities and deforestation could rapidly accelerate the factors that threaten its population. It is essential to protect and conserve the tropical forests where this and many other birds live.
Harpy Falcon:
This majestic raptor is one of the largest in the world. Its impressive size and powerful flight make it an incredible sight to observe.
Although they do not especially live in the reserve, when we carry out activities in the surrounding areas, the visitors to Yacuma EcoLodge who were fortunate enough to see it, distinguish the Harpy Falcon for its imposing size, since this species reaches a wingspan of up to 2 meters and a length approximately 1 meter. Their plumage is mostly dark gray above and white below, they have some black stripes on the chest and white bars on the tail.
Harpy Eagle:
This majestic bird of prey, known for its imposing appearance, is also found in the Yasunà reserve. It is an emblematic species of the Amazon. Its appearance is robust with wide wings and a large head, it has dark plumage and black spots on the chest and white bars on the tail. If you are lucky, you can also see the harpy eagle during the Huorani expedition tours as we explore the areas surrounding the Yacuma EcoLodge reserve.
Their hunting method consists of ambushing their prey from the top of the trees and surprising them with their fast and silent flight; Unfortunately it is in serious danger of extinction. and from Yacuma EcoLodge we want to keep its ecosystem protected to preserve this beautiful bird.
