1. Is it safe to travel to the Amazon rainforest in Ecuador?
Yes, traveling to the Amazon rainforest is definitely quite safe, however you should not ignore all the recommendations and advice given to you by local guides; it is always good to take the necessary precautions, because, although Yacuma Ecolodge is a friendly place for everyone, the company of our expert guides is absolutely necessary. If you are going to travel to the Amazon rainforest alone, make sure to hire a personal guide who knows this destination in depth and stay in recognized places with good safety practices.
Try to find out about the seasonality of the weather and about the precautions regarding untreated water.
2. What is the best time of year to visit eastern Ecuador?
The Ecuadorian jungle has a privileged climate, you can visit it at any time of the year, however there are alterations in the ecosystem and the best time depends on what you would like to see. The dry season goes from June to November and what you will find are more accessible changes and fewer insects, which means that you will have to worry a little less about mosquitoes; while the rainy season goes from December to May, and this time offers a slightly more authentic travel experience as the rivers become full-flowing and the vegetation much more exuberant.
3. Do I need any special vaccines or medications to travel to the Amazon rainforest?
You do not need a specific vaccine, however it is always advisable to visit your doctor before a trip; as valuable information we can tell you that to travel to the Amazon rainforest you can ask about vaccinations against yellow fever and you can also protect yourself with a vaccine against hepatitis A and B, or tetanus; although we must tell you that the risk of contracting these diseases is not high.
On the other hand, if you use any type of medication regularly do not forget to take it with you on your trip.
4. What kind of clothing and equipment should I bring to the Ecuadorian Amazon?
To explore the trip to this wonderful destination you should bring light and quick-drying clothing, it is best to pack light colors, this way you will minimize mosquito bites.
Try to wear long pants and long-sleeved shirts or sweatshirts; do not forget a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses that will protect you from the sun, insect repellent, sunscreen and a waterproof jacket.
Among other accessories that should be in your travel backpack, binoculars, a camera; headlamp and appropriate footwear for walking in wet terrain.
5. What activities can be done in the Amazon rainforest?
There are a number of exciting activities you can do in the Amazon rainforest, such as canoe and boat trips on the river. At Yacuma Ecolodge we have two rivers where visitors can enjoy these activities, the Napo River and the Chontayacu River. You can also go on day and night walks through the jungle to observe the changing fauna that passes through this place, for example bird watching at dawn, piranha fishing and encounters with mammals during the afternoon and amphibian sightings at night. There is also the opportunity to participate in community tourism with the communities surrounding the lodge.
6. What is the food like and can you meet my dietary requirements?
The food in eastern Ecuador is quite varied and rich in local ingredients; even more so at Yacuma Ecolodge, here you will find that our gastronomy is quite fresh and nutritious, and we prefer local ingredients under an exhaustive selection. Our dishes include fish, tropical fruits and vegetables; as for dietary requirements, our kitchen team will be fully willing to comply with your dietary and allergic restrictions.
7. What precautions should I take to avoid affecting the environment during my visit?
All the experiences we design at Yacuma Ecolodge are based on the concept of responsible and conscious tourism with the aim of minimizing the human impact on the fragile ecosystem of the Amazon rainforest. To support this goal, you can comply with the lodge’s rules and the guides’ requests, such as using biodegradable products for your personal hygiene, not leaving trash in the forest, avoiding the use of disposable plastics, avoiding damaging the flora and fauna you find in the lodge and on outdoor excursions, and of course, supporting local communities and our reforestation projects.
8. What species of flora and fauna will I be able to see during my visit?
Even though Ecuador is a small country, the amount of biodiversity that lives here is immense, even more so in the Amazon rainforest; ferns, gigantic trees, walking palms and tropical flowers worthy of the best photographs. Now, when talking about the fauna that surrounds the Yacuma Ecolodge private reserve, you can find a huge variety of endemic birds such as orioles, tanagers, hoatzins, woodpecker herons and many more, you can spot some amazing reptiles and amphibians.
9. Is it possible to visit nearby indigenous communities?
